STERRE LEUFKENS

TAALKUNDIGE &

POPULAIR-WETENSCHAPPELIJK AUTEUR

LINGUIST &
POPULAR-SCIENTIFIC
AUTHOR

My name is Sterre Leufkens, and I am a linguist and an author of popular-scientific books, articles and blogs on language and linguistics.

After studying Linguistics, I did a PhD project in which I studied the so-called transparency of languages of the world, both at the University of Amsterdam. I then moved to Utrecht University, where I work as an assistant professor in Dutch Linguistics. I study the learnability and complexity of languages of the world, as well as the implications of those studies for language education. I also teach about these topics.

Apart from my academic activities, I like to write and talk about language and linguistics for a larger audience. I am co-author of language blog 'De Taalpassie van Milfje' (milfje.blogspot.nl), where I try to disseminate knowledge about and enthusiasm for everything linguistic. I publish regularly in popular journals such as Onze Taal and KIJK Magazine, and I have written a number of books. Furthermore, I give lectures to all kinds of audiences and regularly appear in local and national media.

Why is this website bilingual?

First of all, because the more languages the better: as a comparative linguist, language diversity is what I do and what I enjoy, and a multilingual website reflects that. Secondly, with this website I hope to help two types of audience to find me: Dutch people interested in language, and international researchers interested in my work. As any language user would, I have chosen different languages to address these different groups.
